Duct cleaning is one of the most misunderstood services in HVAC. Some contractors push it on every customer regardless of need; others claim it’s unnecessary. The truth is in the middle. This guide explains when duct cleaning genuinely helps NYC homeowners, what our 2026 process looks like at USA Green Air, and what fair pricing should be.

When Duct Cleaning Actually Helps

  • Visible mold inside ducts or on registers — this is the strongest reason. NYC’s humidity makes mold growth in ducts more common than in drier climates.
  • Recent renovation or construction — drywall dust, sawdust, and demolition debris settle in ducts and recirculate for years if not removed.
  • Pest infestation — rodent droppings, insect debris, or animal nests in ductwork are health hazards.
  • Asthma or allergy sufferers in the home — if symptoms worsen when the HVAC runs, the ducts may be the source.
  • Visible dust blowing from vents — usually means significant accumulation downstream.
  • Burning smell when heat first runs — often dust accumulation on heat exchanger surfaces.
  • Newly purchased older home — ducts in 30+ year old homes that have never been cleaned often need it.

When You Probably Don’t Need Duct Cleaning

  • Your system was installed in the last 5 years
  • You replace your air filter monthly with a quality MERV 8–11 filter
  • No one in the home has respiratory issues
  • You don’t see dust or debris at the registers

The EPA’s official position: duct cleaning has not been shown to actually prevent health problems in homes without specific issues. We agree. We will not sell you duct cleaning if your system doesn’t need it — we’d rather you spend that money on a tune-up that genuinely extends equipment life.

The USA Green Air 2026 Duct Cleaning Process

  1. Pre-inspection. We use a borescope camera to look inside your trunk lines and branches. You see what we see — mold, dust accumulation, debris — before we quote anything. This is free.
  2. Source removal method. We use a truck-mounted negative-pressure system that creates suction across your entire duct system, then physically agitate every line with rotating brushes and compressed-air whips. This is the NADCA-recommended approach. Some “$199 special” companies use only a shop vac at one register — that does almost nothing.
  3. Component cleaning. Supply registers, return grills, blower compartment, evaporator coil (if accessible), and condensate drain pan are cleaned and sanitized.
  4. Sanitization (optional). EPA-registered antimicrobial fog if mold was present. Not always needed.
  5. Post-inspection. Borescope photos of the same locations as before. You see the result.
  6. Filter replacement. New high-quality MERV 11 filter installed at no additional cost.

2026 NYC Duct Cleaning Pricing

  • Standard residential (up to 10 vents): $389–$589
  • Larger homes (11–20 vents): $589–$889
  • Multi-zone or commercial: custom quote
  • Sanitization add-on: $150–$300
  • Dryer vent cleaning add-on: $135

Avoid any company quoting under $200 for “whole house” duct cleaning. The math doesn’t work — that’s a bait price designed to upsell once they’re in your home.

How Often Should NYC Homes Have Ducts Cleaned?

Most homes: every 5–7 years. Homes with pets, heavy cooking, allergy sufferers, or near construction: every 3–5 years. Homes that just had renovations or moved into recently: clean once on a one-off basis. After that, return to the standard cycle.
